Urban Survival, Disaster Preparedness
With GLOBAL unrest being as it is, it truly makes sense to “prepare for the worst, and hope for the best”…
While searching for ways to accomplish that goal, I found the following resource:
Urban survival although it sounds different than wilderness survival, is not really that far removed, when it comes to the survival supplies that you need to live in an urban setting. The same rules for survival still apply, mindset, shelter and warmth, water and food, let’s take a look at the gear that will keep you going. For simplicity I will keep it at a few items that anyone can store no matter wear they live.
Keep in mind that the following can, and should be adapted to your location. A “one size fits all” approach will NOT serve you well…
A survival bag:
This is something that every one should have, it is like the saying goes its better to have it and not need it, then need it, and not have it. In an urban survival situation a bug-out bag or some times called a go bag will have everything in it that will help you live in a survival situation for 72 hours. There are companies that make these survival bags already put together, but it is easier and cheaper to by the pack and the stuff that goes into it and assembles it on your own. When you put together your survival bag just keep in mind the survival priorities: shelter and warmth, water and food. Each person in your family should have there own fully stocked survival bag. A survival bag will come in handy if you have to leave. Another benefit to the survival bag is that you can easily set it up high if your area is hit by a flood.
You WILL want to make sure that your “survival bag” is durable, and waterproof. What good will it be, if it tears and all your assembled stuff falls out and gets lost? Also, if your stuff gets wet, what good will it do you?
Military or quality clothing:
All the survival supplies in the world will do you no good if you are freezing to death. There have been a lot of people that froze to death in their own apartments because they did not have warm clothing and blankets and were not ready for a survival situation. One of the first things to go in an ice storm or flood is the electricity that is why I keep my winter clothing based on what the military is using for survival since it has already been proven in different climates and it is affordable. Although I say I like Military clothing I also like other types of durable clothing like Carhart and wool clothing. The important thing is to find something that works for you and then go with it, before something happens.
Remember, the primary function of these clothes is to protect YOUR BODY, STYLE IS NOT IMPORTANT HERE.
Quality shoes or boots:
In a survival situation if your feet are exposed to elements then you are done. Urban survival as well as wilderness survival requires a lot of foot work. One pair of shoes is usually not enough to get you through an urban survival situation because if one pair is wet you need another to wear while you let them dry. My personal favorite for urban survival is quality lace up boots. I also like moccasins but it depends on the weather, for lace up boots I usually keep a pair of military jump boots and a quality pair of store bought duty boots. If you look at quality boots you should plan on spending at least $75.00 to $100.00 dollars per pair.
There’s really not much more that can be said here. You should make CERTAIN that the foot gear you acquire FITS PROPERLY.
Survival library:
When it comes to the gear that you need for urban survival there is no way that I could cover everything that you need to know in one article. There are a couple of authors that I respect on the subject of survival and that is Cody Lundin and Tom Brown, both of these authors have web sites that have descriptions of their works.

Tools:
In an urban survival situation you may have no access to even basic services, which is why it is so important to have a basic tool set. In the event of an urban survival situation, you become the handy man and the mechanic. When it comes to your tool set do not buy cheap.
and…
Weapons:
Many people are against weapons if you are that is your choice, however, if you look at most urban survival situations that have happened in the recent past, it has brought the worst out in many people. In an urban survival situation if you are prepared, you can bet there will be at least five people who will not be, and they will want what you have. Purchasing a weapon is not a light choice if you are thinking about it get with someone who is knowledgeable on the subject and make a safe and responsible choice. My biggest suggestion that I can make if you are not willing to practice, then do not even bother.
Knowing how to use QUALITY tools, and being familiar with DEFENSIVE-TYPE weapons will go a long way to help ensure your survival, should the worst happen. You will need to get over (if you have it) your aversion to weapons, because you can be sure that if things are really bad, the other guys will have ‘em.
Urban survival or survival in general is a life style, it is not something that you can turn on and turn off. Another way that you can look at it is that what you learn today will help keep others alive tomorrow. To give you an example, we recently had a snow storm, our home weathered just fine but my fathers home froze and he was unable to get water for himself or to his animals. Because I stored water I was able to water his horses, cows and supply him with water. So the point is I did not need the supplies that I had stored, but a loved one did, now put yourself in the same situation, would you be able to help?
